Every day, nearly a billion people in the world are food-insecure, without enough safe and nutritious food to lead healthy and active lives. Many of them are also water-insecure, without reliable access to an adequate amount of clean water to meet their needs. By 2050, our global food demand will double to meet the needs of nearly 10 billion people. To ensure sustainable food and water security in the face of population and income increases, a changing climate, and the growing demand for scarce water resources, it is imperative to improve water management in agricultural and food systems. Recently, President Christina Usher on behalf of Christie Weston introduced our newest member Landon Bartel. Landon is the Development Coordinator at The Hope Venture, a non-profit working to bring hope and dignity to some of the most disadvantaged people in the world. Landon is passionate about people and has a heart to build community and connection with anyone from business owners to impoverished students overseas.

Recently, PDG Jim Mastera introduced our newest member Michelle Zlomke. Michelle has lived in Lincoln for seven years and is the Business Services Officer at Cornhusker Bank. She graduated from Broken Bow High School, and remained in the community for 30 years before moving to Lincoln in 2015. She was a member of Broken Bow Rotary Club, and participated in a Rotary Group Study Exchange to Brazil in 2008.

Lincoln, NE (March 30, 2022) Rotary clubs in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa combined efforts with dozens more scattered across the upper Midwest to airlift medical supplies to Poland and ultimately Ukraine. The effort was initiated by members of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA) based in Chicago and resulted in 50 tons of medical supplies and proved that when people of all types and backgrounds work together, good things result. On March 12, 2022, Keith Larsen was in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, distributing the wheelchairs to polio survivors as an implementation of the UNL Rotaract Wheelchair Project in partnership with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation. The event was well covered by the local media and the wheelchair recipients expressed gratitude to the UNL Rotaractors, Rotary 14 Rotarians, and District 5650 Rotarians for their support of the wheelchair project. Fresh from his trip from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Keith Larsen presented President Christina with the Rotary banner from the Rotary Club of Abidjan. Keith represented the Rotaractors and Rotary 14 in the distribution of wheelchairs to polio survivors in Côte d’Ivoire. The Wheelchair Project was a flagship project of the UNL Rotaract in partnership with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation.
