Electricity. We take it for granted, don’t think about how it’s generated, it’s just always there when we turn something on. But, generating electricity for Lincoln is changing, and the man behind much of that change will tell us about it during our program on June 4. Scott Benson is Manager of Resource and Transmission Planning for Lincoln Electric. This graduate of the University of Nebraska will help us understand how we’re getting more power from the sun and wind. We’ll learn about the LES solar initiative, about those windmills just north of town, about just how much LES is doing to reduce our reliance on generating electricity by burning coal.

110th Rotary International Convention, "Rotary City"

Hamburg, Germany was "Rotary City" last week as 25,000 Rotarians from around the world gathered for the annual RI Convention. Past District Governor Jim Griesen and I were there from Rotary #14 for an energizing week, surrounded by people of action doing good in thousands of ways. There was the Opening Ceremony, what I call the "Olympics of Service" - including a parade of flags from Rotary countries. I have to admit I hadn't heard of some countries: Kingdom of Eswatini, Republic of Kiribati, Sao Tome and Principe. And we heard the good news that the first Rotary Club in Iraq launched last year.

There was the House of Friendship, tradeshow-like booths highlighting the amazing service projects Rotarians do in areas of clean water, literacy, health and more. And there were the encounters with Rotarians. It is like nothing else I've ever experienced. You see people with the Rotary lanyard, Rotary pin or Rotary clothing and you know you have an instant strong connection! I made friends with people at the airport, on the subway, in the coffee shop, and had dinner multiple times with strangers who became friends.

And I met Rotarians looking to partner with us. Our club was invited to participate with clubs from Hawaii in their international service project in the Philippines, bringing clean water to remote villages. Read here for more information. It is an experience of humanity to be a Rotarian. And going to a Rotary International Convention is life-changing. I hope you, my Rotary #14 friends, consider next year's convention in Honolulu. This event will add on a layer of Hawaiian Aloha to the Aloha that is already Rotary. Check out our Facebook page for more photos from the RI Convention.

Bob Rauner Joins the LPS Board

Our own Bob Rauner recently won a seat at the Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) Board of Education.

Bob Rauner, MD, MPH splits his time between 3 roles, 70% of his work time as Chief Medical Officer of OneHealth Nebraska ACO, 30% of his work time leading a community health non-profit as President of Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, and his public service on the LPS Board of Education. He has a BA in philosophy from Creighton University, a medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and a master of public health from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Rauner has helped start 2 independent, physician led ACOs.

Bob has been a Rotarian for eight years and he maintains a perfect Rotary attendance for three years. Bob is active in the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program, serving as host parent and now the Rotary 14 RYE Chair and the Dist. 5650 Youth Exchange Officer. Bob is currently serving in our Board.

The Rotary District 5650 District Conference is on July 26 and 27 - Lied Lodge and Conference Center, Nebraska City. The theme this year is “Shape the Future”.
