Rotary #14 President Mailani Veney

July 2, 2019, is our inaugural meeting for Rotary Year 2019-2020 and the installation of Mailani Veney as Rotary #14 President. Mailani will serve along with President-Elect Eric Drumheller, Secretary Randy Hawthorne, Treasurer Christina Usher, and incoming Directors Nola Derby-Bennett, Doc Chaves, Erin Dobesh, and John Gessert. They will be inducted to their respective roles by Allen Beermann.

President Veney will present her administration's plan of service and plan for fun. As 2019-2020 will be the "Year of Aloha," and to begin the fun, we encourage everyone to come on July 2nd dressed in Aloha Attire! Any Hawaiian or tropical outfit or accessory is welcome. There will be an Aloha Attire contest, and fabulous prizes await the winners courtesy of Valentino's Tony Messenio.

Jennifer Brinkman is Rotarian of the Year

Congratulations to Jennifer Brinkman on her selection as the 2019 Rotarian of the Year, the most coveted award for the year. Jennifer has been a Rotarian for 8 years, served as President in 2017-2018, maintains a perfect Rotary attendance for 8 years, and Paul Harris Fellow +3. Jennifer is former Lancaster County commissioner and chief of staff for Lincoln’s new mayor. She spearheaded fundraising to purchase and plant more than 300 trees as part of a Rotary International challenge. She also helped with the club’s fundraising efforts and even coordinated music for the club’s meetings this past year. Brinkman joins a distinguished group of past award recipients: Klaus Hartmann, Sandi Fabry, Mike Wortman, JoAnne Kissel, James Griesen, Sharon Wherry and Allen Beermann.

Lorie Cook-Benjamin is Rookie of the Year

Congratulations to Lorie Cook-Benjamin as the 2019 Rookie of the Year. Rookie of the Year award is the highest honor bestowed to a new member at Rotary 14. Lorie came to Rotary 14 from Hays Rotary in Kansas. She co-chaired the Epic Experiences of our major fundraiser Rise.Shine.Give and the Greeters Committee. She is currently serving Jean Lovell's remaining term in the P&GE Committee. Lorie is the associate vice president and dean of Doane University’s Lincoln campus.

Last Week at Rotary

Last week was our culmination meeting for a phenomenal Rotary year under President Bretz's leadership. Mike Wortman presented the Rotarian of the Year award to Jennifer Brinkman. President Bretz recognized Lori Cook-Benjamin as Rookie of the Year. Martin Massengale presented the Miller Math award to Kristine Pfabe, and Eric Drumheller announced the winner of our generous scholarship of $10,000 to Annie Bui. And after 52 years as Rotarian, Phil Heckman bid farewell.

The last Rise.Shine.Give Epic Experience was indeed an epic experience for everyone in attendance. Big thanks to Klaus Hartmann for organizing and to Alan Hersch for mentoring the new fishers.

The Rotary District 5650 District Conference is on July 26 and 27 - Lied Lodge and Conference Center, Nebraska City. The theme this year is “Shape the Future”. We have many things planned – one of which will be a cruise on the Belle of Brownville boat!
